I’m Rachael, originally from England, and now the New Jersey-based creator behind handmade paper straw lanterns. I received a box of art straws as a child. When I came across them 30 years later, I thought my girls might enjoy them too. What began as an annual tradition of making handmade Christmas gifts for teachers, friends and family, has turned into our family business, “A Thousand Paper Lanterns”.

Each unique lantern is hand woven from paper art straws. The small hanging lantern is a favorite with customers, while my favorite will always be the conch shell-inspired table lamp. Each lantern includes either battery or plug-in lights, with optional remote control, making the lanterns portable or permanent. They are perfect modern vibe for centerpieces, nightlights, or accent lighting.

Our family goal is simple; we hope to sell enough lanterns to help us visit family in England each year. Now that my sisters and I have our own children, we treasure the opportunity for an annual get-together. My personal goal is to venture out of my comfort zone and embrace the ups and downs of selling something handmade. Although this is my first time vending with Marketspace Vendor Events, I am excited and relieved that they offered to walk me through my first blog entry. I am especially looking forward to bringing our conch shell lanterns to the Jersey Shore craft markets in summer of 2019.
